Explore Chicago’s Biggest October Events, Architecture, Fall Activities, Film Festivals, and Halloween Celebrations

October brings a noticeable change to Chicago. The temperatures drop, leaves begin changing across the city’s parks and neighborhoods, and the event calendar shifts toward fall festivals, architecture, film, and Halloween.

It’s also a busy month for major city events. The Chicago Marathon brings runners and spectators into neighborhoods across the city, Open House Chicago unlocks buildings that are normally closed to the public, and Halloween celebrations take over the final weeks of the month.

Take an Architecture Boat Tour

October is a fitting month to explore Chicago’s architecture, particularly with Open House Chicago taking place later in the month.

Start on the Chicago River with an architecture boat tour. You’ll pass buildings representing different periods of the city’s development while learning about the architects and engineering ideas behind them.

The cooler temperatures can also make October comfortable for sightseeing outdoors. Bring an extra layer for the boat, particularly if you’re taking a morning or evening cruise.

After seeing the city from the river, you can continue exploring Chicago’s architecture on foot or visit some of the buildings opening their doors during Open House Chicago.

Bank of America Chicago Marathon

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon takes place on October 11, bringing tens of thousands of runners onto a 26.2-mile course through the city.

You don’t need to be running to get involved. The route passes through neighborhoods including Lincoln Park, Pilsen, Chinatown, and Lakeview, where spectators gather along the streets to cheer as runners pass.

If your trip falls on marathon weekend, check the route before making plans. Road closures and large crowds can affect travel, but they also make race day an interesting time to explore the neighborhoods along the course.

This marathon is definitely one date worth adding to your Chicago October events calendar.

Chicago International Film Festival

The Chicago International Film Festival runs from October 14–25 in 2026.

Now in its 62nd edition, the festival brings feature films, documentaries, shorts, premieres, filmmaker appearances, and discussions to venues around Chicago.

You don’t have to be a serious film buff to find something interesting on the program. Browse the schedule once it’s released and choose a screening that works around the rest of your plans.

It’s also a useful indoor option if October weather turns cold or rainy.

Open House Chicago

Architecture fans visiting October 17–18 have particularly good timing.

Open House Chicago gives the public free access to more than 200 architecturally, historically, and culturally significant sites across over 25 Chicago neighborhoods. The program includes skyscrapers, private clubs, houses, religious buildings, cultural spaces, breweries, and other places that aren’t normally open to visitors.

Rather than trying to see everything, choose a neighborhood or a handful of buildings before setting out. The event stretches well beyond downtown, so it can also provide a reason to visit a part of Chicago you might otherwise miss.

Pairing Open House Chicago with an architecture cruise earlier in your trip gives you two very different ways to learn about the city’s buildings.

Historic Pullman House Tour

Another October event takes architecture away from the downtown skyscrapers and into one of Chicago’s most historically significant residential areas.

The Historic Pullman House Tour takes place October 10–11 and allows visitors inside selected homes in the Pullman National Historical Park area.

Pullman was developed during the 1880s as a planned industrial community for workers employed by George Pullman’s railroad car company. Today, the neighborhood provides a very different architectural experience from the Loop and Chicago River.

It’s a good addition if you’ve already seen downtown and want to learn more about the neighborhoods that developed alongside Chicago’s industrial growth.

See Chicago’s Fall Colors

You don’t have to leave the city to see the season changing.

Lincoln Park, Jackson Park, Humboldt Park, and the lakefront all provide plenty of space for an October walk. The Chicago Botanic Garden, north of the city, is another option if you want to devote more time to being outdoors.

The exact timing of fall colors changes each year, so there’s no guarantee that every park will be at its peak during your visit. Even so, cooler days make October a comfortable month for exploring Chicago on foot.

If you’re wondering what to do in Chicago in October between ticketed events, choose a neighborhood and spend a few hours walking rather than filling every part of the day with attractions.

Arts in the Dark

Halloween celebrations start well before October 31.

Arts in the Dark returns on October 24 with a nighttime parade through downtown Chicago. The free event features artists, dancers, musicians, puppeteers, performers, illuminated lanterns, costumes, and large-scale floats.

For 2026, the parade is moving back to Columbus Drive, travelling north from Balbo Drive toward Jackson Boulevard.

It’s an easy event to combine with an afternoon around Grant Park or the lakefront before finding a place along the parade route for the evening.

Spend Halloween in Chicago

Halloween itself falls on a Saturday in 2026, and several events are planned around the city.

The Haunted Halsted Halloween Parade takes place in Northalsted on October 31, combining costumes, performances, and a costume contest. Washington Park hosts the family-friendly Upside Down Halloween Parade earlier in the day.

Film fans can get into the Halloween mood earlier in the month as well. The Chicago Horror Film Festival runs October 2–4, while the Music Box Theatre hosts its annual 24-hour Music Box of Horrors event on October 24.

With events spread across several weekends, Halloween is a major part of the October events in Chicago rather than a one-night celebration.

Visit Lincoln Park Zoo in Fall

Lincoln Park Zoo is free throughout the year, and October brings its annual Fall Fest.

The seasonal program runs on selected dates and typically includes a pumpkin patch, entertainment, fall activities, and other family-friendly attractions. Some activities require separate tickets, while admission to the zoo itself remains free.

After visiting, you can walk through Lincoln Park, stop at the nearby conservatory, or continue east toward the lakefront.

There are plenty of events in Chicago in October, but you don’t need to build the entire trip around a festival calendar.

Take an architecture cruise, walk through a neighborhood as the leaves change, watch the Chicago Marathon, visit a museum, or spend an evening at a film screening. Later in the month, Halloween adds parades and seasonal events across the city.

For visitors searching for things to do in October in Chicago, the month provides a useful mix of major events and everyday sightseeing. Keep some flexibility in your plans, pack for changing weather, and leave enough time to explore beyond downtown.
